Among the varied tasks you as a Student Network Technician may be assigned to learn and do are:

  • Support the UNLV Campus Housing ResNet program, which provides the UNLV Campus Housing residents with Internet access.
  • Provide troubleshooting and repair advice on students' personal computers.
  • Provide troubleshooting and basic repair on The Division of Student Lifes' computers, CATV system and security systems.
  • Provide preventative maintenance on Rebel card readers, security hardware, vending readers, printers and computers and keep the inventory current.
  • Write and maintain simple programs and scripts.
  • Answer basic questions about Campus Housing ResNet software, the campus Ethernet network, and common applications used by students.

You will not be expected to answer every technical question. However, you should be able to refer students to other computing resources, or to find the answer from other resources.

Prerequisites

Upon applying for an SNT position, you must:

  • Be a currently registered undergraduate or graduate student at UNLV
  • pass a background check.
  • Have at least a 2.0 GPA
  • Have an adequate technical aptitude
  • Be a self-starter and self-motivated
  • Have strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Have the ability to teach others
  • Have a desire to learn and succeed.

Hours

Typically, you can expect to work:

  • 20 - 40 hours per week during ResNet rush and semester startup*
  • 7 - 20 hours per week after the first three weeks of the semester*
  • * The hours worked will vary depending on the number of residents who need help, and on the vagaries of the machinery you may be assigned to maintain among other factors.



Duties

As an SNT, you will be expected to:

  • Be knowledgeable of the contents of the ResNet web pages
  • Assist residents in resolving network and computer problems.
  • Keep the computer labs functioning.
  • Maintain office computers.
  • Assist with maintainence of the ResNet network.
  • Maintain positive attitude during contact with hall residents in both customer service and in casual situations.
