When you have completed configuring Windows95/98/Millennium, you will find further directions at the bottom of this document. You will need to create a RebelMail Account, which can be done from anywhere the week before a semester begins. Next, you will register your room connection and your computer. Registration must be completed from within the UNLV Residence Halls.
Before following the instructions in this document, make sure your Ethernet card has been installed correctly and your Category 5 patch cable is plugged into your computer and into the correct wall jack.
Note: If you are using Windows Millennium and not all control panel items are listed, click on the blue link on the left that says to view all control panel items.
Open "My Computer" (Note: the icon may have been renamed), then double-click on the Control Panel icon.
Double-click on the Network icon.

The Network Control Panel will list the Network Adapters, Protocols and Clients you have installed on your system. Your configuration will likely vary from the illustration above.
In the list should be the Ethernet card installed in your computer. If it is not in the list, press
, select "Help". Under "How do I..." select "...set up hardware" for the hardware installation Wizard that will lead you through installing your network adapter card drivers. Be sure to use the drivers from the disk(s) that came with your Ethernet card (When it prompts you to select a driver, click on the "Have Disk" button.) We do not recommend using the Ethernet drivers that come with Windows 95/98.
If you have used your computer to connect to the Internet before, in addition to your Ethernet adapter, one or more lines may have the "TCP/IP" protocol listed. If TCP/IP is already present in the Network Control Panel, skip to step four.
From the Network Control Panel, click on "Add".
Select "Protocol" then press "Add" to continue.

Next, select "Microsoft" then "TCP/IP". Click "OK" to continue.

You will be prompted to insert your Windows95/98/Millennium CD-ROM or diskettes (unless you have the cabs on your hard drive), and the appropriate TCP/IP files will be copied to your computer. When the file installation is complete, you will be returned to the Network Control Panel. The TCP/IP protocol should be present in the window.

Select the TCP/IP protocol line from the list. Note: if you have a modem, there may be two TCP/IP protocols installed--one for the Ethernet adapter and one for the Dial-Up Adapter. Select the one associated with the Ethernet adapter. For example:

Click on "Properties" and the TCP/IP properties window will come up. Under "IP Address" select "Obtain an IP address automatically".
Under "Gateway" highlight then remove any Installed gateways
Under "WINS Configuration" select "Disable WINS Resolution"
Under "DNS Configuration"
Under "Advanced" put a checkmark in "Set this protocol to be the default protocol".

Press "OK" to save your entries.
Click "OK" on the Network Control Panel. You will be prompted to restart your computer. Select "Yes". If you have pressed "OK" and you are not prompted to restart, press
, "Shut Down", "Restart the Computer", "Yes" to restart your computer anyway.

If your computer tries to dial a connection press
and then go to "Settings", double-click on "Internet", select "Connections" then select "Never dial a connection."
To double-check that you received an IP address, press
, select "Run...", then type winipcfg and press the Enter key. This will bring up an IP configuration window. Make sure your 10BaseT Ethernet adapter is highlighted on the pull down menu. (If you have a modem installed, a PPP adapter or modem name may also be present. Be sure your Ethernet adapter is selected.) A number similar to "131.216.xx.xxx" should appear in the IP address box. If not, click on "Release", followed by "Renew".

If you have "0.0.0.0" or "169.254.x.x" listed for an IP address, or receive a message similar to "A DHCP server could not be located," you do not have a completed Ethernet connection. This could be caused by any number of reasons, including:
