Connecting with Windows 2000

When you have completed configuring Windows 2000, you will find further directions at the bottom of this document. You will need to create a RebelMail Account, which can be done from anywhere the week before a semester begins. Next, you will register your room connection and your computer. Registration must be be completed from within the UNLV Residence Halls.

Before following the instructions in this document, make sure your Ethernet card has been installed correctly and your Category 5 patch cable is plugged into your computer and into the correct wall jack.

Installing the TCP/IP Protocol

You may have installed the TCP/IP protocol automatically when you installed the Windows 2000 Operating System.

To check, go to the Control Panel (from the "Start" menu or from "My Computer") and select "Network and Dial-up Connections" and right-click on "Local Area Connection." Choose the "Properties" from the menu.

If you've previously installed TCP/IP, it will appear in the list of installed protocols. If this is the case, skip to the Configuring TCP/IP section of this document below.

If TCP/IP is not installed, install it by:

  1. Click on the "Install" button.
  2. Double click on "Protocol."
  3. Double click on "TCP/IP."
  4. Insert the Win2000 CD-ROM if prompted to do so.

Configuring TCP/IP

Go to the Control Panel (from the "Start" menu or from "My Computer") and select "Network and Dial-up Connections" (right-click "My Network Places" and choose Properties") and right-click on "Local Area Connection." Choose the "Properties" from the menu. Highlight the TCP/IP entry and press the "Properties…" button.

Check the "Obtain an IP address automatically" radio button.

Check the "Obtain DNS server address automatically" radio button.

A dialog box will appear informing you that DHCP will be used to configure your workstation. Press "OK" to close this dialog box, and close the Network control panel.

Next, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Start button. Go to Settings, then choose Network and Dial-up Connections.
  2. Right click on Local Area Network and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
  3. In the Components windows, click (highlight) Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click on the Properties button.
  4. Click on the Advanced button, then select the DNS property sheet by clicking on the DNS tab.
  5. Uncheck the box marked Register this connection's address in DNS. Click OK.
  6. Click additional OK buttons to exit the network properties.

Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

Registration

  1. Create a RebelMail Account
  2. Register your connection (You must do this step from within the UNLV Residence Halls)
  3. Register your computer (You must do this step from your UNLV Campus Housing room)
    • Start your web browser. Immediately press "Stop". Go to resnet.unlv.edu. Click on Register your Computer link. Press . Type your Pioneer login and password into the dialog box, then press "OK". In a few moments you should get back a page indicating that you have successfully registered your computer.
    • Wait 15 minutes, then restart your computer.
    • Once the computer has rebooted, you should be ready to run any Internet applications installed on your computer such as Netscape Navigator and many others. Congratulations! You're connected to ResNet...and beyond.

Troubleshooting your connection

To double-check that you received an IP address, press , select "Run...", then type ipconfig and press the Enter key. This will bring up an IP configuration window. Make sure your 10BaseT Ethernet adapter is highlighted on the pull down menu. (If you have a modem installed, a PPP adapter or modem name may also be present. Be sure your Ethernet adapter is selected.) A number similar to "131.216.xx .xxx" should appear in the IP address box. If not, click on "Release", followed by "Renew".

If you have "0.0.0.0" or "169.254.x.x" listed for an IP address, or receive a message similar to "A DHCP server could not be located," you do not have a completed Ethernet connection. This could be caused by any number of reasons, including:
