PC Software

It is preferred that you visit the Office of Information Technology's Student Help Desk to receive their free software CD which contains programs like:

• Ad-Aware
• Symantec Anti-Virus
• SSH Secure Shell
• WS FTP

among other useful software. ResNet recommends installation of Symantec Anti-Virus and Ad-Aware so that you can scan your computer for viruses and spyware periodically. It is recommended that you do this at least once a week.

If you prefer to use a different Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware software you may purchase one of the following products:

• Norton
• AVG
• PC-Cillin

You also have the option of choosing one of the following free Anti-Virus programs:

• AVG Home Edition
• Avast Home Edition

recommended to be used in conjunction with one or more of the following Anti-Malware programs:

• Ad-Aware
• Spybot Search and Destroy
• Hijack This (for advanced users only)

It is also requested that you perform all Windows Critical Updates at least once a month if not more often

Additionally, you must disable the following features:

• Windows Messenger-- This feature allows malware companies and other computers on your network to send you pop-ups and other unsolicited material. Disabling this feature does not affect the performance of MSN Messenger or any other legitimate instant messaging program.
• Universal Plug N Play-- This feature allows unauthorized users to remotely connect to your computer and the peripherals connected to it. Once remotely connected, a user can obtain access to your personal information and gain control over your PC. Disabling this feature does not affect Plug N Play hardware installation.
