First ensure that your computer is connected to the LAN. In order to do this, you must ensure that your computer is connected to the network with Cat 5, Cat 5e, or Cat 6 cable (Ethernet Cable). This cable should be plugged into the Ethernet port that is typically in the back of your computer and to the wall jack in the wall.
***Note***
ResNet does not provide a wireless connection. If you are receiving Internet through wireless, it is not through ResNet. If you wish to be connected to ResNet, disable your wireless connection. -- !!
To find out the current status of your network connections, you must first go to Vista's Network and Sharing Center. This can be done by typing "Network and Sharing Center" into the Start Search bar or accessing it through the Control Panel. In the Control Panel it is Control Panel >> Network and Internet >> Network and Sharing Center.

In the Network and Sharing Center, you will want to go to Manage Network Connections. It is in the sidebar to the left, second from the bottom.
Now that you are the Network Connections menu, you might see as many as three or four different icons. If you are on a desktop, you will probably only see "Local Area Connection." If you are on a laptop you may also see connections like "Wireless Connection," "1394 Bridge," "UNLV Wireless," . . . etc. Disable all connections that are not the "Local Area Connection" as this is the only connection which will provide you a connection to ResNet. To disable these connections, look to Disabling Wireless.

Now that you are in the Network Connections menu (If you are not, see Checking your Network Connections), you can disable those connections which are not your "Local Area Connection." It is important to do this because having more than one Internet connection may cause your computer to be registered under the wrong MAC address or become confused. In either of these instances, registration may fail or your computer may fail to communicate properly with the switches, hampering your connection to the Internet.

To disable your other Network Connections, right click on the icon so that you may see a drop down menu. On that menu, choose "Disable". After doing this, the icon will go gray and note that it is disabled. After you have disabled all other connections, you may continue on.
***Note***
If you experience difficulties with your wireless or other connections outside of your resident room ensure the relevant connection is not disabled. To enable the connection, just double click the icon. This will enable it and activate the connection if the cables are properly connected and your connection is configured.
To configure your settings for ResNet, first open your "Local Area Connection." In your "Local Area Connection," select the button "Properties" (Windows may give you a warning, say "Continue").

In the properties, you will see an option called "Internet Protocol version 4(IPv4)," double click on it.

This takes you to the properties of this Internet connection. Make sure the following boxes are selected: "Obtain IP Address Automatically," "Obtain DNS Server Automatically," and "Automatic Private IP". Refer to the pictures below for the correct settings.
