During the first year of college, your student will meet new friends, go new places, face exciting challenges, and experience independent living. They’ll also develop leadership skills, participate in fun campus events, study, and in many cases, develop and grow into mature adulthood.
With all these changes, many students feel overwhelmed and sometimes a little nervous. At UNLV, we want to help your student succeed. If your student is a freshman coming from a high school outside of Clark County, Nevada and you’re taking at least 6 credits, UNLV requires that they live on campus during their first year. This regulation is meant to help smooth the transition from high school to college, and besides, living on campus is a lot of fun.
As with any rule, there are a few exceptions. If your student is:
• Married;
• A sophomore (having earned at least 24 credits);
• Not coming directly from high school (i.e., you graduated from high school at least one year before entering UNLV and have been living independently or have been serving in the military);
• A transfer student who has completed at least two full-time semesters at another university; or
• Going to be living with family or legal guardians within metropolitan Las Vegas.
They may also be excused if they have:
• A medical issue certified by a physician and approved by Campus Housing after reasonable accommodations are made (e.g., room assignments, facilities, etc.).
• A financial hardship supported by a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA).
• Another documented, compelling, special circumstance.
• If your student falls into any of these categories and would like to be excused from the regulation, you must submit your written request and relevant documentation to Campus Housing by the deadline.
UNLV Campus Housing is the sole authority for the Freshman On-Campus Housing Regulation. All written waivers to the regulation are subject to Campus Housing approval. Students are responsible for complying with the regulation and failure to comply may be cause for denial or cancellation of class registration.
