Why Live on Campus > Freshman Housing > Exceptions

Exceptions and excuses

As with any rule, there are a few exceptions. The regulation does not apply if you're:

  • Married
  • A sophomore (having earned at least 24 credits)
  • Not coming directly from high school (i.e., you graduated from high school at least one year before entering UNLV and have been living independently or have been serving in the military)
  • A transfer student who has completed at least two full-time semesters at another university
  • Going to be living with family or legal guardians in the Las Vegas area

You may also be excused if you have:

  • A medical issue certified by a physician and approved by Campus Housing after reasonable accommodations are made (e.g., room assignments, facilities, etc.)
  • A financial hardship supported by a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA)
  • Another documented, compelling, special circumstance

If you fall into any of these categories and would like to be excused from the regulation, you must submit your written request and relevant documentation to Campus Housing by the deadline

UNLV Campus Housing is the sole authority for the Freshman On-Campus Housing Regulation. All written waivers to the regulation are subject to Campus Housing approval. Students are responsible for complying with the regulation and failure to comply may be cause for denial or cancellation of your class registration. For additional information or questions, contact Campus Housing.
